The Essence of a Portrait
For me, Yousef Karsh has entirely and eloquently summed up my feelings for the art of portraiture. A good portrait is a window to the soul, a capturing of the very essence of an individual.
A good portrait of an adult can be hard to attain. We all have an image of who we are, who we want to be and how we wish to be perceived by others. All I ask is that you are relaxed and open. We will spend an hour or two taking a few pictures, chatting, trying different poses, maybe in different locations. We can discuss your session in advance in order to form ideas of what it is that you are looking for. Don't worry if you are stumped for idea's - I have lots of thumbnail images I can bring along for inspiration.
Location shots can be particularly dramatic. Let your imagination loose. Where is your favourite spot to just be yourself, where the real 'you' will shine? Think of what moves you deeply. Collect and develop your thoughts and idea's and together we will find the perfect portrait for you. The kind of image that makes everybody who knows you say 'Yes! That is the real you.'

We have portable studio lighting and can quickly set-up a shoot in your own home at a time to suit your lifestyle. This is particularly beneficial regarding families. Children are often more relaxed in a familiar environment and therefore tend to act more naturally than in a professional studio. Of course if it is a 'Bump' portrait you are seeking then I don't need to explain why it is more convenient for us to come to you when you are 37 weeks into your pregnancy!
Alternatively, we can often work with natural light either from a window or outdoors if you prefer. I have captured beautiful portraits even in low light conditions under a canopy of trees for example.
There are many styles of portrait to choose from. Starting with the high-key 'Venture' style look with bright colours and white backgrounds through to the more sophisticated low-key portraits that are perhaps more thoughtful, more expressive.

Certainly, a family portrait with young children generally wants to be bright and full of laughter and fun. High key is perfect for this. Then again, take a look at the low-key image of the mother and child with the sparkler. It is both intimate and poignant - a perfect moment captured forever.

High key also looks very good for those wanting a striking artistic image such as the one with the leather jacket. This image has been deliberately overexposed and a grain effect has been added for character. In colour or black and white this is the kind of artistic image that looks great on a large wall-mounted canvas.

Pet Portraits
Man's Best Friend
Especially when I'm eating a biscuit.
Especially when I'm eating a biscuit.
This is 'Sugar' one of our two black labradors. At four years old she is still a complete puppy! I caught this image by pure chance when she was only 5 months old and it sums up her character entirely.
From childhood we have always kept a menagerie of animals including dogs, tortoises, fish, horses, chickens, pigs, a cow, rabbits and guinea pigs (no children yet!) though thankfully they don't all want to sleep on the end of the bed!
Pet Portraits can be a lot of fun and occasionally very hard work. After the initial excitement of a new person wears off most animals are fairly obliging. We both love animals and I'm sure they can pick up on this. The portrait can be any style you like whether it is a high-speed action shot, a cat snuggled up in it's basket, a good formal shot or a puppy being....well being a puppy. You can have just a picture of your pet or of you all together.
We can deal with any pet at all so please contact us if you have an unusual subject. Even the smallest pet can make a great portrait as we have macro lenses that can focus literally eye-to-eye.
Among others, we donate monthly to the following animal (and related) charities.
Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals,
Royal Society for the Protection of Birds,
World Wildlife Fund,
Friends of the Earth,
Greenpeace,
Woodland Trust.
Any support you could offer them would greatly help to relieve the suffering of animals and help to secure the diminishing natural habitats around the world. The links page on the menu bar has all of their websites listed.

Model Portfolio's (Fashion)
A well developed portfolio is an essential tool for any aspiring model.

Sessions are 2, 4 or 8 (For a long distance location shoot) hours long and are either studio and/or location based or shot in your own home (we have portable studio equipment).
A professional make-up artist and hair stylist is available if required.
Please call or email with your requirements as this shoot is tailored to your individual needs. If modelling is new to you we can meet in advance to discuss idea's, look for new inspiration and make sure you are well prepared for the photo shoot.
Models are very welcome to bring a friend/partner, particularly one who is fun and full of life, to the shoot and this is actively encouraged. Your favourite music can also help to make you feel more relaxed and comfortable.

As well as prints you can buy a cd with all of your final images (amount varies according to shoot length) which you are free to reproduce as many times as you like.
Any model who appears to be under the age of 21 must have a valid passport or photo-card drivers licence to prove they are over 18 years of age. Any model under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or a legal guardian. Please be prepared as there are no exceptions.
Portraits' for Lovers

Not nearly as racy as it sounds! In fact most photo's of this nature tend to be relatively subtle and quite suitable for hanging on the living room wall. Although some images may be a little erotic the emphasis is firmly on the beauty of the human form and the bond between lovers.
Fine-art nudes have always been popular with abstracts being increasingly sought after.
Many people choose to have the colours saturated and the image printed on a large canvas to produce an abstract piece of artwork. Black and white images are also very popular and evocative. I have even produced this type of work for a clients unsuspecting partner - luckily they were thrilled with the results!
The images can be as safe or daring as you choose (within the realms of reason and taste obviously) but I am not easily shocked. Generally, people are a little anxious at first especially if they have not posed naked/semi-naked before but after a few minutes most relax and focus on the art of posing.
If you are worried about your body shape (as most of us are to some degree!) rest assured that there are many ways of ensuring that the artwork will show the very best of you. It is possible to remove any scars/tattoo's if you wish but that is a matter of personal preference and many people like the work to be authentic.
We recommend that you do not wear any tight clothing over skin that may be seen in the artwork for at least two hours before the shoot - sock marks on ankles are not generally deemed attractive!
Please feel free to call and discuss any issues or questions you may have.
My wife, Amanda, and I will be present at the shoot and you are welcome to bring a partner or friend along with you. The images will not be used for any gallery or advertising purpose etc without your express written permission.
